Personally, I find it very relaxing whenever I do avant garde looks on people or any other look that requires me to use face paint. I like moving out of my comfort zone which is usually bridal makeup or glam makeup. Because of the advent of TikTok and the many makeup artists on the app, there has been a high demand for face paint in the market. So just in case you’re interested, here are the kinds of paint that you can use for creative makeup needs.
Make Up Forever Flash Palette
This is a multi-use Cream Color Palette. We’ve actually used this paint to mimic the skin tone of people. Make Up Forever is a high-end brand so it retails for around 99 US Dollars. But this face paint palette is totally worth it.
It’s easy to apply and mix with other colors to create new colors. However, it doesn’t set so well. If you want is to last long, you’re going to have to set with powder or eyeshadow and use a lot of setting spray.
Snazaroo Face Paint Kit Ultimate Party Pack
This is the perfect face paint for people with sensitive skin because it’s really made for kids. This is why you often see face painters at birthday parties using it. However, because it is hypo allergenic, and way cheaper than the one from Make Up Forever, you can’t expect it to be as pigmented and it won’t last that long.
Makeup artists usually use this one from Snazaroo for practice before they use their more expensive face paints which actually makes sense since a lot of avant garde looks are prone to mistakes.
Kryolan Supracolor Interferenz Palette
Kryolan is one brand that is very popular to stage actors because of the quality of the finish of the base products and because of the coverage. They have different colored pigments but if you want the less complicated kind to start with, you can go for the Kryolan Supracolor Interferenz Palette.
This is a refillable 6-pan palette with 2 selections. The first one is the Standard palette with your RGBs or essentially, your primary colors. The second one is the Duo-Chrome palette which includes a mix of primary colors and other shades (which means it’s easier to come up with skin tone shades mixing these colors together).
Personally, I’ve used the Supracolor Foundation palette a lot. And I totally have no problems with it. The fact that the palette is refillable is a big plus because you can buy any Supracolor pan and purchase it to refill the palette.
If you want something with a fuller coverage from Kryolan, you can check out the TV Paint Stick but this comes in bigger sticks and contains more paint per color so it’s a lot more expensive per piece.
Kryolan also has big tubs of paint for colors you will use more often like your whites or blacks. And of course, they also carry airbrush colored pigments.
Pro Paint by Graftobian
This list won’t be complete without anything from one of the most widely renowned SFX Makeup brands, Graftobian. Their face paints are bought per color which is great specially if you want to buy a few colors only.
Unlike other face paints, the Pro Paint by Graftobian works like watercolor – it needs to be activated with a small amount of water. So it kinda turns into cake that becomes easily spreadable. You can layer it for coverage and once it sets or after setting with powder, you can layer the details with another color.
The best part it, the paint is actually vibrant so it’s very rare that you’re going to layer them on top of each other.
iMagic Flash Palette
The iMagic Flash Palette is a dupe of the Make Up Forever Flash Palette – it looks exactly like it. And, it’s way cheaper. Now, I can’t vouch for this but a lot of people have said that it might have come from the same manufacturer. Either way, I’ve also tried it and I definitely have no problems with it. If I do, it’s the same problems I have with the one from Make Up Forever, they both crease bad if you don’t set them well.
And there you go. If you’re still unsure, you can easily check out Amazon because the are so many other brands available. I bet even your local book store has one!
